Olive Edwards, former patient, extract from interview 2006

"We would save leftovers to feed the birds and squirrels ... birds would peck at the windows to be fed and ask for extra toast to hide and give ... you could always find somewhere quiet and lovely to sit in the garden so many nooks and crannies ... there was an overwhelming sense of belonging and not wanting to leave, of being at home ... there was an incident when a squirrel got in and a male nurse on the ward who was 6ft tall was so frightened he jumped on the bed ... they let it out through the dining room."
