The location of the building has always been of great significance. Contemporary records show that Mother Harriet, the Foundress of the All Saints Sisters and the hospital chose the site for its healing properties, clean sea air and light. Early photographs show the building alone in the landscape with its impressive profile against the Downs and the skyline.
The scale, design and quality of the building was outstanding by contemporary standards. All Saints was one of the largest convalescent hospitals in Europe.
